Metsä Group: Improving application quality assurance and testing

Unified group-wide testing tools and processes

Mikko Lampinen

Head of Digital Development and DevOps, Tietoevry Tech Services

The challenge

Quality assurance was difficult to compare and manage as testing tools and processes were not unified across the group. Managing the testing tools was time-consuming and it was difficult to estimate license needs. Preparing for peak times was costly.

The solution

Metsä Group wanted to outsource the management of testing tools. Tietoevry provided GDPR audited testing tools and management of cloud-based testing environments as a service (SaaS) with 24/7 availability. Tietoevry’s testing consultants helped to set up best practices for managing test cases, large test case libraries and version management.

The fundament for Agile and DevOps ways of working

Quality assurance was challenging as tools and processes were not unified across the group. Metsä Group sees testing capabilities and test automation as a fundament for Agile and DevOps ways of working. To improve quality transparency and testing capabilities Metsä Group was looking for a more standardized approach to managing testing processes, tools and test cases. Furthermore, the objective was to improve operational efficiency as well as cost-efficiency.

Various businesses, Metsä Group suppliers, and a wide application portfolio, consisting of for example SAP, set requirements towards testing environments and tools. Previously, Metsä Group hosted testing platforms internally but concluded that it’s not cost-efficient and increases response times: Metsä Group would need an estimated 2–3 persons just to cover in-house support needs.

Our key driver was to get shared testing tools, processes and a platform for all Metsä Group business areas and chosen suppliers.

Testing tools as a Service

Testing tools as a service (SaaS), user support and consultation of best practices has helped Metsä Group to reach the desired application quality level.

“Suppliers produce the results from unit testing. With integration testing we secure the functionality between the various systems. Together with suppliers we do also unit testing. At the end of the process we do business acceptance testing.” Alanne describes.

With Tietoevry’s cloud-based testing services Metsä Group managed to centralize a large part of testing documentation, such as test cases, and streamline the operations test management processes. The same testing platform is suitable for storing manual test cases and also automated test scripts.

All Metsä Group business have taken the service into use. Quality measurements and follow-up testing process are now much more unified, which makes it possible to compare results group-wide. Paying per month for actual usage is a cost-efficient way to acquire a service. Long-term upfront estimations on usage volumes are no longer required.

SaaS is a cost-efficient way to acquire a service: We pay per month for exactly what we use.
