Climate action

Through leading technologies and the smart use of data, we believe we can positively impact the environment and build solutions that benefit everyone – from our customers to society at large.

Tackling environmental challenges to protect and save our planet for future generations requires commitment, a proactive approach, and an aspiration to continuously improve.

Our long-term targets are defined in our Sustainability Pledge. In the pledge, we have set ambitious targets to achieve net-zero carbon emissions in our own operations by 2026, and we are working to cut 90% of our market-based energy-related GHG emissions by 2026.

We can positively impact the environment by reducing carbon emissions in our own operations and value chain, as well as by carrying out our operations in a responsible way. Through the use of leading technologies and the smart use of data, we believe we can build solutions that benefit everyone – from our customers to society at large.

Circular economy practices – recycling and reusing of hardware – are crucial in our mission of becoming even more responsible in our own operations. Together with our ecosystem of partners we create purposeful technology that reinvents the world for good.

We focus our measures on where we have the biggest impact: running our own offices and data centres with a strong emphasis on energy efficiency and reducing business travel. We also recognize our contribution towards CO2 emissions caused throughout our value chain.

The Environmental Policy is the basis for our environmental work. The policy defines areas on which we build our development activities.  Our aim is to minimize our negative impact, in other words, our footprint. We also aim to increase our positive environmental impact, our handprint.

We do this by continually assessing our significant environmental impacts and implementing relevant changes. A significant environmental aspect is one that has or has the potential to have one or more impacts on our operations. Our most significant environmental aspects are related to our data centres and our office areas. Our environmental impact is visible in our supply chain and we monitor related emissions as a part of scope 3 -reporting. Concrete actions and yearly progress are reported publicly in our sustainability report.

We have also identified aspects with positive environmental impacts, like carbon dioxide emissions we can avoid through sustainable and sound digitalization. Read more on our sustainable projects.

We are continuously exploring new ways to minimize our environmental impact and reduce our greenhouse gas emissions. We do this by working in environmentally certified offices, purchasing renewable energy for our data centers and reducing travel. Our operations are ISO 14001 certified.

Our Environmental Management System, EMS, helps us to identify, manage, monitor and control environmental issues in a systematic and holistic manner. External certification is a way of signalling to our customers and other stakeholders that we are implementing the standard properly and improving our environmental performance continually.  It’s also in many cases a requirement from our customers and evidence of reference level environmental performance. By completing certification, we also assure our stakeholders that we meet international environmental standards. Certification by external auditors tend to strengthen the recognition and credibility of ISO 14001.

Tietoevry participates annually in Ecovadis rating and Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) reporting. From them, we receive external guidance on development activities.

The Environmental Rule outlines the principles implemented in Tietoevry’s ISO14001 certified Environmental Management System. This Rule is also Tietoevry’s communication on commitment to United Nations Global Compact, Sustainable Development Goals and Science Based Targets.

Tietoevry ’s carbon reduction targets have been verified by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) as being in line with the level of reduction needed to limit global warming to 1.5°C.

Our commitments are:

  • 90% reduction of CO2 emissions in scope 1 and 2 by 2026 from 2020 base-year.
  • increase annual sourcing of renewable electricity from 80% in 2020 to 100% by 2026
  • reduce scope 3 business travel GHG emissions 47% per average full-time employee by 2030 from 2019 base-year
  •  70% of significant suppliers by emissions, covering purchased goods and services, will have science based targets by 2026.
